College Credit Plus 2017-18: Overview
Ohio’s College Credit Plus can help you earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses from community colleges or universities. The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to college-ready students. Taking a college course from a public college or university is free. That means no cost to the family of public and private school students for tuition, books or fees. If you choose to attend a private college or university, you may have limited costs.
Your high school may have an agreement with a local college for specific courses; however, you can choose to take College Credit Plus courses from any college that offers a course that would benefit your future. This could include online courses.
Here is the response that we received from the Kirtland School Superintendent on this subject:
“Districts are required to allow students in grades 7-12 access to college credit plus courses (or “College Courses” as you had asked). Local school districts are required to pay for the cost of any courses students take at any college/university (unless if they fail – then the parent/student must cover the cost). Currently Lakeland charges us $41.57/credit for courses our students take (the majority of our students take their courses at Lakeland). This cost doesn’t include the textbooks (which the district must all purchase as required by law).”
We are going to reach out to the schools in Lake County and try to quantify the total number of students participating in program and the total costs associated with this program.
Quite frankly, we thought public education meant K-12, and did not include paying for college. There will be a lot more to come on this subject. When we see Lakeland’s real estate tax revenue go from $10 million in 2008 to $20 million in 2018, we are starting to get a real sense of where our tax dollars are being spent without the majority of Lake County residents even being aware of the program. We are about to wake people up!

Just received an update from Mr. Bill Wade, Superintendent of Kirtland Schools. He mentioned that Lakeland has raised their prices for the next school year:
Calendar Year 2017 – 2018 2018 – 2019
At High School with Our Teacher $41.57 $41.64
At High School with Lakeland Professor $41.57 $70.00
At Lakeland Community College $41.57 $95.00
Ladies and Gentlemen – we have a big problem!!!!
