Perry Nuclear Power Plant…another viewpoint

We are re-printing this article with the permission of the patriots at Auburntownship.org.

(LFC Comments:  This issue is a very difficult one for LFC to “get our arms around”.  The basic problem is that taxpayers have been fed so many lies, distortions, deceptions, and misinformation on most issues from both sides of the aisle and the corrupt media, sorting fact from fiction is nearly impossible.

There is no question in our mind that the closure of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant will have a very serious economic impact to Lake County. The loss of jobs will have a negative ripple effect on the community, and the loss of property tax revenue will have to be made up by the residential and commercial / industrial property owners.

However, it is unclear to average taxpayers how they are really affected by the power generated by the Perry Plant.  Who really understands the “power grid”, how it works, and what factors impact it?  When we flip a switch, we expect the lights to go on, and we expect to pay a reasonable price for the service.

We wonder if the business model of nuclear power plant is no longer sustainable, but we are told that without the plants we will no longer be in compliance with federal regulations of the ‘Clean Air Act’, which will bring “hellfire and damnation” on all of us.

When we hear about ‘energy credits’ we immediately think of the United Nations’ policies of climate change and know that is bogus.  Filling up Lake Erie with wind turbines, or attaching solar panels to every structure in Lake County do not seem like viable options.

Hmmmm image

So we must admit, we are confused.  The lack of knowledge on how it all works, the distrust of politicians, and those with a vested interest in the power generation business has us wondering who is ‘blowing smoke up our kilts’.)

ANOTHER TAX INCREASE FOR EVERY BUSINESS AND RESIDENTIAL TAXPAYER IN OHIO
Published Friday, April 19, 2019

Ohio’s House of Representatives are considering an outrageous bill to force taxpayers to bailout monopoly utility FirstEnergy’s uneconomic nuclear and coal power plants while limiting our ability to invest in solar energy.

HB 6 would impose a $300 million annual tax to subsidize FirstEnergy’s aging, expensive nuclear power plants. It would also repeal the state’s successful renewable and energy-efficiency power plant standards. These standards have led to more than $4 billion in savings and thousands of new Ohio jobs.

If the bill passes, every Ohio resident will pay $2.50/month and businesses will pay between $20-$250/month to private corporations to prop up their noncompetitive investments. Adding insult to injury, the proponents are calling the tax increase a “clean air resource” bill.

Make no mistake, HB 6 is corporate welfare at its worst, distorts the market, and harms our ability to generate our own solar electricity.

To stop this outrageous taxpayer giveaway to monopoly utilities, you can take three actions:

1. Urge your elected representative to oppose HB 6.

2. Testify against the bill at one of the upcoming public hearings before the Energy Generation Subcommittee. The hearings are Tuesday April 23rd and Wednesday April 24th at 10am, in room 313 at the Ohio House of RepresentativesPlease RSVP and we’ll reach out to you for more information on the hearing and to assist with your testimony.

3. Forward this alert with your friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

With your help, we can shut down this outrageous corporate welfare bill, and stop this gross attempt at crony capitalism in its tracks.

This link will allow you to send an online form to your representative.

Here is a sample script to your house representative,

Dear ( representative’s name),
I am writing to ask you to oppose HB 6. This bill would force Ohio taxpayers to bailout utilities’ uneconomic nuclear and coal power plants while limiting our ability to invest in affordable clean energy like solar.

HB 6 would impose a $300 million annual tax to subsidize FirstEnergy Solutions’ expensive nuclear plants. It would also repeal the state’s successful renewable and energy-efficiency power plant standards that has led to more than $1 billion in savings and thousands of new jobs for Ohioans. If the bill passes, every Ohio resident and business will be forced to prop up private corporations’ uncompetitive investments.

I urge you to vote against HB 6. This outrageous taxpayer giveaway to monopoly utilities is corporate welfare at its worst, distorts the market, and harms our ability to take control of where our energy comes from by going solar.

Sincerely,
Your name
