ELECTION 2019

Lake County Elections Board seeking poll workers

The Lake County Elections Board is seeking poll workers for the Nov. 5 general election.

Poll workers must attend a mandatory training in addition to working on Election Day. Workers are paid $25 for the training and earn another $125 on Election Day.

According to the application, training sessions typically last between 1 ½ and 2 hours.

Elections Board Director Ross McDonald said that “rookie” poll workers are among those they’re seeking. Off-year elections see lower turnout. McDonald said that makes it a good opportunity for those who want to get involved during next year’s presidential election to gain experience before what could be a historic turnout next year.

McDonald added working as a poll worker is a good way to learn more about how the election process works.

The elections board is seeking poll workers of all ages. High school seniors who are at least 17 years old are eligible to serve as poll workers.

McDonald said those interested can call the elections board general phone line at 440-350-2700.

Early voting underway

Absentee voting is underway in Ohio. As of 4 p.m., Oct. 17, there were 4,509 requests for absentee ballots in Lake County, according to elections board records.

A copy of the absentee ballot application can be found on the Lake County Elections Board website and can also be mailed by calling 440-350-2700.

The latest date to submit the absentee ballot application is by noon, Nov. 2. The Elections Board “strongly advises” those seeking to vote absentee submit their application no later than Oct. 31, to ensure adequate time to receive, vote, and return the ballot timely.”

Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Nov. 4 and be received by the elections board no later than Nov. 15 to be eligible for counting.

Voters may hand deliver their absentee ballot to the elections board by 7:30 p.m., Nov. 5 (election night). This is the first election the Elections Board is conducting from their new office in the recently opened Lake County Administration Center. The elections board office is now located at 105 Main St., Suite 107, in Painesville.

Early voting can also be done in person at the board of elections office.
