Ross McDonald Board of Elections

Ross McDonald

We received some questions about voter registration, and the Lake County Elections Board Executive Director, Ross McDonald, gave us the answers.  We thought you might be interested.  Many thanks to Ross for his quick and concise responses.

Does Ohio have a process for automatic voter registration?

Answer: Ohio currently does not have automatic voter registration.

What should a voter do if he or she no longer lives in the county?

Answer: There are a variety of answers to your question.

  • If he is residing in a different Ohio county, he should contact that county BOE, indicate where he lives, and ask them where to cast a provisional ballot on Election Day. Voting a provisional will serve to update his registration and also allow him to vote.
  • If he has moved from the State of Ohio, he should cancel his voter registration in Lake. The voter cancellation form can be found at this link: https://www.sos.state.oh.us/globalassets/elections/forms/10-a.pdf

(LFC Comments:  We wondered if there are any penalties for “Double Voting”, and found this website that has the answers:

https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/double-voting.aspx

Excerpts from article:
“Most commonly, states prohibit voting more than once “in the same election.” This can be interpreted in different ways. Is voting in more than one state but on the same day voting in the “same election”? Or is each state-run election a separate election? What if voting occurred on different days, i.e. a voter cast an absentee ballot in one state and voted in person in another state on Election Day?”

31 states and Washington, D.C., prohibit voting twice in the same election: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.”

“Underlying these state statutes is the Voting Rights Act’s prohibition on “voting more than once.” 52 U.S.C. § 10307(e).

(c) False information in registering or voting; penalties

  17. Great info for us average citizens who generally believe in laws which guide our elections, except if you find a loophole in election law that allows you to run in a Republican Primary Election when you are not even a registered Republican, like what is happening in the County Recorder race. The best voter is an informed voter. The Republican is Becky Lynch. And a letter of protest was submitted to the Secretary of State on this important matter. Thank you!
