Lakeland Community College…their clock struck 13…

blowing taps

(LFC Comments: We are still wondering when the Lake County Commissioners are going to weigh in on the plight of Lakeland Community College.  We can faintly hear the sound of taps being played at the Mooreland Mansion.

Mooreland-Mansion

Our apologies to George Orwell for this rewrite: “It was a bright cold day in May, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Morris Beverage, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Mooreland Mansion, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.”

There is something brewing at Lakeland Community College, and it is not the coffee.  We received the following email with these comments from various Kirtland lobbyists:

“This is regarded as an insult, not a bonus. Still watching for word of a pay cut for administrators.”

“It would be very interesting to know what jobs were eliminated last week.”
“An inquiry into the background of the Senior Vice President For Institutional Development and Effectiveness might be illuminating, especially in light of the constant reminders of the institution’s total lack of effectiveness.”

Commissioners? Commissioners?…Covid-19 got you rattled?…Please come out from your bunker… Buehler?…Buehler?…Houston, we have a problem..Anyone out there?

Can you get a hold of Commissioner Cirino?…yes, we know he is measuring for the drapes in his new Columbus office, but we believe he is still drawing a paycheck from the County…

Is Commissioner Young back from lunch yet?  Commissioner Hamercheck… we know that you are working…saw your name in the paper.

Subject: Retention Bonus and Longevity Stipend

Hello:

The semester has ended and I hope this e-mail finds you healthy and ready for summer.  I am writing to remind eligible part-time faculty to look for an additional payment in the May 15 and/or May 31st pay.  Please see the details below.

On May 15, adjunct faculty teaching a full session or P2 section that was previously scheduled for face-to-face instruction, but as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, was converted to remote delivery for the balance of spring semester will receive a $250 retention bonus.

On May 31, adjunct faculty having taught or worked as a counselor or librarian in either the Fall or Spring semester of the 2019-20 academic year are eligible to receive a longevity bonus based on the number of terms worked over the course of their employment as an adjunct.

Please see the chart below for the number of terms and associated stipend:

  • Between 10 and 19 terms taught:  $100
  • Between 20 and 29 terms taught:  $150
  • Between 30 and 39 terms taught:  $200
  • More than 39 terms taught:  $250

The number of terms worked for each adjunct was based on Banner payroll records beginning with the 1999-2000 academic year.  Service prior to that time was verified via a manual count by Human Resources staff.  This affected approximately four dozen individuals.

Here are some additional details of how the numbers of terms were determined:

  • Summer teaching assignments were not included in the total number of terms
  • In the case of former full-time faculty members, only post full-time employment terms as an adjunct were included in the total number of terms.  Likewise, any terms worked under a full-time temporary contract were not counted.
  • Terms employed as a CCP instructor were included in the total number of terms.

If you have questions, please contact me at cbush@lakelandcc.edu.
