Cursive Writing….not needed at Riverside

cursive writing

I must admit that I was aghast, yes filled with horror and shock I tell you, when I learned from a very reliable source that the Riverside school district [Lake County, Ohio] does not teach cursive writing to the school children.

We are calling out the Riverside school board and the administration for this irresponsible action, and we will contact them to determine who made this bone-headed decision.

So it is acceptable to the school board that the children will no longer be able to read any document written in cursive, and “signing” their name with an “X” is acceptable to the Riverside school board and the administration.

SHAME ON RIVERSIDE SCHOOL BOARD FOR SELLING OUT THE CHILDREN OF YOUR DISTRICT.

FORGET YOUR IDEAS OF SPENDING $100+ MILLION OF TAXPAYERS’ MONEY ON A NEW SCHOOL WHEN YOU CANNOT EVEN TEACH THE CHILDREN HOW TO WRITE THEIR OWN NAME.

  2. During the space race, the USA spent over a million dollars to design a pen that would write in zero gravity. The Soviets used a pencil. My point, just print. Cursive is obsolete and not cost efficient. With so many other critical skills to be learned, I’m afraid cursive is down the list. If you have an interest in reading cursive, computer programming, or a foreign language, feel free to learn it on your own! But to spend dozens of instructional hours on a mode of communication that is outdated…sounds like someone needs to read Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery.

  3. To Anonymous’s comment:

If you cannot write cursive, you usually are not able to read it.

There is more to reading than just the analysis of letters making a word.

The process of the brain analyzing what is sees through the eyes is all part of the synergistic hard-wire of the brain, transferable to the other senses, skills and experiences for a more optimum functioning brain.

So, yes, dumbing-down, because you have been robbed of the ability, the choice, the freedom to enlarge your awareness, to read a note, a love letter, someone else’s scrawl, the historical letters of your country (being stollen right out from under you).

When a country is taken over, one of the first things is to stop true communication/exchange between people, their papers & media (which has almost happened in the USA), open private letters, etc.

Your every move is monitored with technology, when you turn on your cell, your computer, your cable TV.

  4. Dumbing down? Serious question: aside from a signature, when else is cursive needed? Answer: never…unless you are an artist. Should we go back to clay tablets and cuneiform as well? What a waste of time…

  5. We completely agree. We think it is the purposeful dumbing down of the children.

  6. This has been going on for a long time. My adult/chlldren are 30 and not only did they not receive penmanship (in CA), but, they were just directed to type, without a typing class guidance (which I had to take in high school 1970’s (92 wpm), referred to some type of online read & learn. I don’t believe anyone will cares.
We conservatives need to get organized fast or we are going to lose, because, as you can see, the takeover is very organized.

  7. We are going to find out who is in charge of curriculum. We will let everyone know.

  8. Specifically who were the bone head idiots who are responsible for this stupidity?
