As we communicated last week, the Concord Trustees will hold the first of several Stakeholder Meetings to gain community input around their proposed process to design, build and fund two new fire stations. This is a key opportunity for residents to provide input and encourage the trustees to find a more affordable solution to build two much-needed new stations.

 Concord citizens have been very clear about their core interests: Build two new fire stations that are in line with the size and emergency response requirements of our community and that do not require additional taxes.

Affordable Concord Taxes (ACT) continues to advocate:

• Utilizing township housing and commercial development projections to determine the future fire safety requirements.
• Sharing fire equipment and training with neighboring communities to avoid duplicating costs wherever possible.
• Considering if a third fire station is needed and how this impacts the two existing fire stations and their construction.
• Reducing the projected size and costs by rethinking the current assumptions and designing rooms with multiple purposes.
• Minimizing station square footage to reduce building costs, as well as ongoing operating and maintenance costs.
• Reviewing a sound financial plan for building two new fire stations, which considers the current economic crisis and other township projects beyond the fire department (i.e. addition to the town hall.)
• Ultimately, building affordable fire stations, which are appropriately sized for the future needs of our community and do not raise new taxes.
