On Friday, July 16, 2021 the Board of Lake County Commissioners announced Commissioner John Plecnik graduated from the Ohio Public Leadership Academy for state and local elected officials at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs.
“Selection for the Ohio Public Leadership Academy is a great honor reserved for local leaders with the highest potential,” said Commissioner John Hamercheck, president of the Board of Lake County Commissioners. “It’s official, Commissioner John Plecnik is a rising star.”
The Glenn College is named for astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn and is the public policy school at The Ohio State University. According to the Glenn College, “The Public Leadership Academy brings together a bipartisan group of rising Ohio elected officials to learn from each other and build lasting relationships across political boundaries. The intensive, one-week, residential Academy builds trust among participants who return to political life with a better understanding of their colleagues and a renewed commitment to public service.”
“It was an honor to represent our home in Lake County at the Public Leadership Academy,” said Commissioner John Plecnik. “The opportunity to network and learn from leaders across Ohio is invaluable and I was personally grateful for the chance to meet the Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety and tour the Ohio Emergency Operations Center, learn crisis management from a retired Major General and head of the Ohio National Guard, and talk policy with the Assistant Director of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio.”
Commissioner John Plecnik was sworn in as the 79th Commissioner in the history of Lake County on February 11, 2021 after winning the appointment. In the past, Commissioner Plecnik was elected to three terms as Willoughby Hills Councilman-at-Large and served as Library Trustee for Willoughby-Eastlake Public Libraries.
“Lake County is proud our newest Commissioner John Plecnik was recognized as one of only three County Commissioners in Ohio selected to attend the Public Leadership Academy this year,” shared Commissioner Ron Young. “John is a lifelong learner, and his thoughtful and deliberative leadership is a great benefit to our local community.”
Commissioner Plecnik is also known as Professor Plecnik at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, where he serves as an Associate Professor of Law. Professor Plecnik has also taught classes at North Carolina Central University and Georgetown University. Internationally recognized for his work, Professor Plecnik won the prestigious Bilateral Grant twice from the Public Research Agency of the Republic of Slovenia, and his research has been cited as authority by the Supreme Court of the United States.
