Ohio Value Voters joins with Center for Christian Virtue to alert Ohioans of this dangerous bill that is a direct threat to parental rights.

URGENT ACTION IS NEEDED

From Center for Christian Virtue COLUMBUS—Under the guise of child sexual abuse and violence prevention, Ohio lawmakers are working to pass an undefined “age-appropriate” comprehensive sex education mandate for all students in grades K-12, with no option for parents to opt their children out of the program. Already passed by the Ohio House with an 86-8 vote, Erin’s Law (House Bill 105) has a number of critical issues: 

1. There are no specified standards to determine what is “age-appropriate.” 
2. Parents are not permitted to opt their children out, even if they disagree with what is being taught. 
3. There are no requirements or specifications for who can create the curriculum.

“While no responsible adult would oppose preventing sexual abuse, House Bill 105 appears to be yet another wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said David Mahan, Policy Director at Center for Christian Virtue. “HB 105 doesn’t identify any curriculum to be used or even what organizations would be selected to join the task force. The bill only specifies that the task force will force their brand of instruction on sexual violence—and sexuality in general—upon children as young as Kindergartners.”

“Just a quick review of other states’ Erin’s Law task forces reveals that they consider the best practice to implement their curriculum is integrating them into the same controversial comprehensive sex-ed programs that parents all across Ohio have been fighting to remove from their schools.”

This “best practice” model of comprehensive sex education includes not only instruction on safe and unsafe touch, but also sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender roles and stereotypes. In fact, the number-one provider of comprehensive sex education curriculum is the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), the parent organization of Planned Parenthood. Their motto is “Sex ed for social change.”

Additionally, the National Sexuality Education Standards K-12 Advisory Committee currently includes:

1. The President and the Director of Public Policy for SIECUS
2. The Director of National Education Initiatives for Planned Parenthood Federation of America
3. The Vice President and the Director of Education and Outreach for Advocates for Youth, a strategic partner of Planned Parenthood
4. The Director of Training and Curriculum Development for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

Your Ohio lawmakers need to know that HB 105 will not protect our children from sexual abuse, but will both expose children to explicit sexual content and deny parents the right to direct the upbringing of their children.
