We thought that Lake and Geauga County taxpayers might appreciate learning the core beliefs and the guiding principles of the Social, Emotional Learning (SEL) program that is permeating the Ohio public schools without parents, or the citizens of the community that are funding the schools with property taxes, knowing about the indoctrination.

The following information was taken from the Responsive Classroom – Resource Book – Middle School Course, being used by the Lake County Riverside School District.
CORE BELIEFS
In order to be successful in and out of school, students need to learn:
A set of social and emotional competencies:
- Cooperation
- Assertiveness
- Responsibility
- Empathy
- Self-control
A set of academic competencies:
- Academic mindset
- Learning strategies
- Academic behaviors
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Six principles guide the Responsive Classroom approach:
- TEACHING SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS IS AS IMPORTANT AS TEACHING ACADEMIC CONTENT. [Emphasis added by LFC]
- How we teach is as important as what we teach.
- Great cognitive growth occurs through social interaction.
- How we work together as adults to create a safe, joyful and inclusive school environment is as proper as our individual contribution or competence.
- What we know and believe about our students – individually, culturally, developmentally – informs our expectations, reactions, and attitudes about those students.
- Partnering with families – knowing them and valuing their contributions – is as important as knowing the children we teach.

We recommend that parents and taxpayers know the proficiency scores of their particular school district. Then they can assess if the school district’s responsive classroom approach, where teaching social and emotional skills (formerly the role of parents and family) is as important as teaching academic content. How will the academic proficiency scores improve if they are to be de-emphasized?
