Senator Rob Portman and DACA….you decide if he is on your side

One of our members wrote to Senator Rob Portman asking for his opinion on illegal immigration and the DACA issue.  Here is his response:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Those in the DACA program came here as children, and for many this is the only country they know.  I agree that Congress should act rather than continue the Obama administration’s unconstitutional executive action.  I support bipartisan efforts to find a permanent solution that will allow those in the DACA program to stay here and continue to contribute to our society.  I believe we can and should respect the rule of law while also dealing with this issue in a humane and compassionate way, and that’s the approach I believe the administration and members of both parties in Congress should take as we look at legislative solutions on this issue.

Our immigration system is broken and in need of comprehensive reform.  We are strengthened by being a nation of immigrants, but we must also respect the rule of law. This means that we should keep the doors of America open to those who come legally and enrich our society and contribute to our economic prosperity, while doing a much better job of enforcing our laws.

While the United States must control its borders, the primary magnet for immigration continues to be jobs, and we must do more to enforce our laws at the workplace, too.  Even if border enforcement is more effective, it will do nothing to curtail the roughly 40 percent of illegal immigration that results from visa overstays. This is another reason workplace enforcement is so key. Implementing an effective E-Verify system is of critical importance to stemming the tide of future illegal immigration and making immigration reform work.

I will continue to review legislative proposals to reform our immigration policies in a manner that will uphold our laws while continuing to bestow the privilege of American citizenship to those who pursue it through legal means.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. For more information, I encourage you to visit my website at Please keep in touch.
