Can Mark Zuckerberg influence elections?

LFC Comments by Brian Massie, Executive Director:

The truth about election integrity in Lake County has become an important issue for us. We received the following Axios article from a Willoughby lobbyist regarding donations from the uber liberal Mark Zuckerberg. There was a question about whether Lake County was involved. Therefore, we asked Mr. Ross McDonald, Director, if the Lake County Board of Elections had received any of this funding.

Thanks to Mr. McDonald for responding so quickly. Here is his response:

I can report that our Board of Elections did not seek, nor receive, funding from this group.

Sincerely,

Ross McDonald Director

Excerpts from the article:

“Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg are putting up $300 million to promote “safe and reliable voting in states and localities” amid the pandemic, the Center for Tech and Civic Life and Center for Election Innovation & Research will announce Tuesday.”

“Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) said Americans need voting information “from trusted sources, and these dollars are going to go a long way to making that happen.”

[LFC Comment: From the following Cleveland.com article we discovered that Frank LaRose, Ohio’s Secretary of State, and our legislators accepted $1.1 million in funding.]

Excerpts from the article:

“But some Republican officials are debating whether to take what appears to be free money, especially given the controversy surrounding Zuckerberg, Facebook and Big Tech in general among conservatives.”

“The bulk of the money is headed to county board of elections, via the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as promoting elections modernization and civic engagement. But Ohio lawmakers on Monday without debate approved accepting $1.1 million from the Center for Election Innovation & Research, a Washington D.C. nonprofit. That money will pay for radio, TV and digital ads describing absentee voting procedures, combatting misinformation, poll worker recruitment and other items, according to a request submitted by Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, a Republican.” (emphasis added by LFC)
