At a recent Commissioners’ meeting we heard them talking about the health insurance costs for the Lake County government employees.  We contacted the Finance Director and asked for numbers to tell us what the taxpayers are paying for health insurance for County employees.

Here is what we were told:

We have a total of 1,022 County employees.

Total spent on Lake County healthcare in 2017 was approximately $14.7 million, and we are on pace to spend another $14 million in 2018.

Lake County self insures and the Third Party Administrator in Medical Mutual  They receive $38,000 – $40,000 PER MONTH to handle all the processing of claims, etc. They did waive the first five months as part of the new contract.

There are several plans to choose from, but in all cases the employee portion is 15% with the taxpayers picking up 85%.

The top of the line coverage (including dental) will cost an employee with family coverage $325/month.  This equals $3,900 per year, and the taxpayer paying the remainder of $22,100 annually..

A step down in coverage would cost the employee $315.12/month, or $3,781.44 per year, with the taxpayer paying the remaining $21,428.40 annually.
