Well, this is a huge surprise. We have been waiting for a basic statistic that we thought was tracked by each school system and the State of Ohio on their Cupp Reports. They track virtually every other statistic, but for some unknown reason choose not to be transparent with the taxpayers on the student / teacher ratio for each school district.
Here the email that we received today:
“The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) is no longer calculating any pupil teacher ratio for Ohio school districts. The last fiscal year this ratio was calculated was FY2008. After that update, there were changes to the EMIS system and the variables that went into the calculation of the pupil teacher ratio were no longer compiled to enable us to calculate the rate. We used to report the pupil teacher ratio on the Cupp Report, but since the removal of this statistic from the data bases of ODE, we have also discontinued reporting it. Sorry about that. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have other data needs.”

We know that the number of teachers for each school is given on the Treasurer of the State of Ohio’s, Josh Mandel, website, and the number of students is available on the Cupp Reports. So we will be able to make a valid approximate calculation. Where this is a will, there is always a way!
