Mentor’s Gil Martello spoke at the recent Mentor School Board meeting. The following is a transcript of his public comments.
By Gil Martello, Mentor, Ohio resident
Good evening, Mr. Heath, Mr. Wade, and members of the board.
Let’s cut right to the chase.
Two weeks ago, we had a national referendum.
President-elect Donald Trump framed the presidential debate primarily around national security, inflation, and the excesses of the political left’s woke agenda.
The election resulted in a trifecta win for the Republicans, sweeping the presidency and both houses of Congress.
The election resoundingly repudiated the political left’s ideals, so much so that Ohio State’s Senator Sherrod Brown lost his 30 year seat to Republican Bernie Moreno.
As Tip O’Neill said many times, “All politics is local.”
Board members, I have repeatedly stated over the past three years that this school district and its policies are at odds with the majority of this community.
Preliminary estimates indicate that Mentor voters favored the Republican ticket in a 60/40 split. The actual totals are inconsequential.
What is important, a vast percentage of the Mentor’s voters are being alienated.
Of course, this flies in the face of this board’s continued left-leaning bent on many policy decisions.
I am asking my peers here tonight to take a page from the national media and the Democratic Party right now; please reflect on the election results and what they portend.
Remember, the most unified and diverse voting bloc ever, came together and clearly stated the direction our country must head.
Let’s retire the name-calling and move forward as it looks the rest of the nation is doing right now.
Board members, you have the power to either unite this community or divide it further.
If you choose to unite it, we must take the following steps:
- Remove the few books from the school library that are patently offensive to many.
- Allow our young ladies their privacy in locker rooms and restrooms.
- Ensure that the school environment does not favor one ethnic, racial, or sexual orientation group over another.
The halls of the Mentor School District cannot serve as billboards for indoctrinating lifestyles or choices that some parents find objectionable.
If you take swift and decisive action on the aforementioned items, my instincts tell me the next levy placed on the ballot in the coming year will pass.
Doing anything other than what I have suggested will likely jeopardize the fiscal fate of the district.
Thank you very much, and have a good evening.
