Are Local Leaders Really Worried About Their Neighbors?

By Brian Massie, A Watchman on the Wall

We were made aware of Facebook posts by Lake County “leaders”, Morgan McIntosh, Gabe Cicconnetti, and Friends of Ken Gauntner warning citizens of our initiative to abolish property taxes.

We suggest that they may want to be real leaders and solve the problem of citizens being taxed out of their homes rather than just trying to maintain the status quo and scaring the citizens.

Lake County’s public sector is outgrowing the private sector’s ability to pay for the services. The accumulation of “rainy day funds” in many taxing authorities is truly spectacular.

When I was asked by Concord Administrator, Andy Rose, how is he going to pay for the police, fire, and road services without property taxes, my response was to “send me a bill, Andy”. I will pay a fee for the services, but just do not tie the fee to my home.

Why should the payment for services be tied to the value of a citizen’s home? If I am not using the service, why should I pay a tax? Perhaps a fee based on use is a more appropriate way to pay for the service. The library is but one example.

Perhaps there needs to be a decision on why we have so many municipalities, which duplicates administrative costs. Does Lake County need so many fire and police departments? Does Lake County need nine school districts, or can one school district eliminate millions in administrative costs.

Instead of the scare tactics on the citizens and the township’s employees, we suggest that the local officials work with the Ohio Representatives and Senators to change the townships’ funding sources. We will pay for services, just do not tie any taxation to our homes.

Homeownership is the foundation of freedom and liberty. It allows the transfer of wealth from one generation to another. It is a means for families to get out of poverty. Currently, we are merely renters from the government.

To the Lake County “leaders”, we know that you have your “bases covered”, but what about your neighbors? Perhaps the commandment to “Love thy Neighbor” is merely a suggestion in your world.

ANY TAX CAUSING A CITIZEN TO BECOME HOMELESS IS IMMORAL!
