State Representative David Thomas (District 65) speaks to the unfairness of school boards approving for the employee portion of their retirement benefits. It is called the “pickup”.
Testimony questions on HB 473
Public Pension Pickups are wrong. The taxpayer paying for the employee’s share of the pension occurs in a vast majority of cases for the highest paid public employees to hide the true salary figure. The employee should have skin in the game for their pension and the taxpayer know what their dollars are going to for salaries. Taxpayers would never be comfortable with this for all public employees, so we shouldn’t allow it for any. HB 473 stops this practice.

The current Riverside School Board gave the new Treasurer , Steve Thompson, a fantastic compensation package and even provided a “pick up on his pick-up”. Perhaps that contributed to two board members not being re-elected.
