Lakeland CC….starting student housing?

We received this tip from a Lake County source..

“Lakeland is now prepared to start on student housing on campus. They say it will allow students to finish and get a degree.

That’s all they are interested in is degrees, not jobs for community. This housing is nuts, as far as I am concerned.

In new H Health building they had 5 new programs with 31 new students for this semester.

Have you visited Hive on main floor of H building?”

(LFC Comment:  We have not seen the “Hive” yet, but it is on our “to-do” list.   What do you think about a Community College having student housing on campus?  LCC had a disturbing drop in enrollment (9.6%) in the last year.)

  11. As a lake county resident and tax payer, enough is enough! We don’t need student housing at a community college, a community college means the student live at home to hold down the cost of a college education, period! I have (2) grown children that attended State Universities that we paid for, not other tax payers in Columbus,Ohio. Lake county just raised all our property taxes with their property re-evaluation determinations ( that we have no vote or say in) We all must stay NO to new taxes, telling our elected officials, school boards, and college trustees that they must learn to live within their budgets as we do in our personal budgets. We should no longer give them increases as they continue to ask for one levy after the next, with little or flimsy evidence of their perceived emergencies! The free ride on the backs of the property owners needs to end.

  12. Thank you for your comment Engineer. If I were a parent of a high school student that attends the College Credit Plus program at Lakeland, I would be concerned with dorms added to the college grounds. It appears LCC is moving away from the original mission of a 2 year commuter college, and toward another 4 year college. I must say that the Health Technology facility is impressive, but for $68.5 million it should be.

  13. Does the Lake County taxpayer realize that the land is being leased to this “public private” venture for $1.00 a year? Enrollment has dropped over the last nine years… I guess someone believes he is Kevin Costner, “build it and they will come.” Wait until the “partner” starts renting rooms to non-students… because Lakeland students are commuters… It is in the dorms, excuse me “student housing” that the trouble occurs… underage drinking, drug use, rapes, and general mayhem occurs…. Hope the Lakeland police double in size. The disaster(s) taking place at Lakeland are so predictable…
