Concord Trustees will hold a special meeting to vote for an $8 million or $6 million bond levy to be placed on the November ballot to help fund two new fire stations. This will raise your taxes. It seems the Trustees didn’t hear citizens overwhelmingly state last November, “NO NEW TAXES.” Or their strong opposition to raising taxes at the Stakeholder Meetings.
There is a better way to fund the stations. First, build Station No. 2 now, which the Trustees stated can be paid for with existing funds. A streamlined and cost-effective design would provide our firefighters and taxpayers with a desperately needed structure that can be replaced without delay.
Second, it is premature to ask taxpayers for $6 million or $8 million for an enormous central fire station with so many unknowns, especially when there is not even a final floorplan or firm cost estimate from the architects.
Raising taxes now, during this economic crisis, is an unnecessary burden on the residents of Concord, especially those who have been unable to work or recently lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
It is frustrating that at this crucial meeting, there will be no public comment. And other financing options will be discussed only AFTER they vote to ask taxpayers for more money.
