There was some discussion at the last commissioners’ meeting regarding a waste hauling company charging, what was deemed by a concerned citizen, as excessive fees for “contaminating” the recycled product in their dumpsters. The Commissioners asked for help trying to determining what was happening in the other municipalities in the County. We volunteered to inquire about Concord Township. We did visit Concord Township’s office and got the following information from their very helpful staff. Here is my email to the Commissioners:
Regarding the suggestion to have a single countywide waste hauler, that is something that LFC would not support. We do not believe that it is the County’s prerogative to pick winners and losers in the marketplace, since we do not consider waste hauling as a public utility. That policy can lead to corruption, and larger government. We believe that the citizens are best served when competition between vendors is allowed to take place and customers get to select the vendor that is best suited for their needs.
We do agree, however, that Ms. Chamberlain has a valid point about the need to continue to recycle because that ultimately helps all of us.
