Lake County Health Department Faces the Budget Commission

By Brian Massie, A Watchman on the Wall

The Budget Commission is continuing to meet with the various taxing authorities in Lake County. The Health Department does not have a specific property tax levy, but they get revenue from various Lake County agencies that do receive property tax revenue.

In addition to the financial status of the Lake County Health Department, Auditor Chris Galloway and the Budget Commission listen to Adam Litke, Lake County Health Director, discuss the $400,000 balance between Lake County and Geauga County Health Departments.

It was agreed by both parties that the Health Department has excess funds that can be returned to the entities that support the Health Depaartment.

From Auditor Galloway:

“To be clear, the Health Department returning $500k this year would go back to all the entities that contributed, proportionally. The cities, villages, townships and county. Then we would reduce how much they collect in 2027 by $500k. For a total return/reduction of $1m. I think that is a good start, and what I’m proposing.”

Auditor Galloway asked that the Lake County Prosecutor’s office get involved to help resolve the disagreement about the unpaid $400,000 by the Geauga County Health Department.

The final decisions will be made by the Budget Commission at their August 28th meeting. We plan to be there to record it for the citizens of Lake County.
