The current State Representative for District 89, D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, created a bit of a kerfuffle by backing out of the race to be reelected in November, 2026. He is in line for another government job, so opted to back out of the race.
I knew about the pending “election” occurring in Erie County to decide between Caleb Stidham, Erie County Treasurer and chairman of the Erie County Republican Party and Jennifer Widmer, Ottawa County’s auditor.
I was met by John Adams, Republican, and was promptly told that I could not take a video recording the meeting because it was not the Board of Election meeting, but rather the Republican Party was in charge.
It appears that the Erie County Republican Party does not believe in transparency with the voters. Rather sad, I must say.
The party chairman and secretary for the three local parties each had a vote. The four officials from Huron and Erie counties voted for Stidham. Stidham, naturally, voted for himself. The two Ottawa County officials voted for Ottawa County’s auditor, Jennifer Widmer.
Since there was a 2-2 tie, the Secretary of State, Frank LaRose had to be the tie-breaker, and chose Caleb Stidham.
Our patriotic friend, Steve Kraus, also wants to be considered for this open seat. He is a write-in candidate.
