Lobbyist Bob reached out to Commissioner Hamercheck and asked for his response to our earlier post “Illegal Aliens”…..what is the score? He received permission from Commissioner Hamercheck to publish his comments, and in keeping with our policy of honesty and transparency, we publishing those comments for all to read. [You may wish to read our original article to gain some context]
Bob: First Sheriff Dunlap. While you can’t answer for him, it sounds as though he did have a dismissive attitude, as Mr Massie alleges, and no definitive response when questioned about illegal aliens and his support or non support of ICE. I will contact the Sheriff.Hamercheck: “”I would not presume to speak for Sheriff Dunlap, but I will speak up for Sheriff Dunlap. I base my position off of my years of working with law enforcement including the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and my spending several hours working directly with Sheriff Dunlap (trying to find a solution to rebuild the current jail rather than replace it and tear it down. The savings would be between $60-$100 million) before the August 16th Commissioner meeting. Sheriff Dunlap has indicated, and I have observed, that law enforcement cannot just pick and choose which laws they want to enforce. I am aware that as a border county that received assistance from the federal government for border protection, Sheriff Dunlap is fully compliant with all of the laws on the books.””
Bob: Second, the prosecutor. I find it interesting that he stated that he will not deal adversely with any illegal aliens because “he may need them to help solve a crime in the community.” I plan to contact him.
Hamercheck: “”Again, I would not presume to speak for Prosecutor Coulson, but I will speak up for Prosecutor Coulson. I realize I am preaching to the choir when I say this, but it needs to be stated the Prosecutor is part of the justice system. Speaking academically and not about any cases in particular, if Prosecutor Coulson were dealing with a pre-teen American born rape victim, should he go the “extra mile” and determine if her parents are both “legal”? What if one or both of them were not and they were deported, taking their American born rape victim daughter with them? Let’s see, how would that end? No victim=no crime and a child molester goes free. How does this serve justice? To be the best of my knowledge, Prosecutor Coulson follows the law. If someone else wants to go the “extra mile”, that is up to them. I am very concerned when someone who is as tough a prosecutor as Chuck Coulson is taken out of context and made to look soft on illegals.””
Bob: Thirdly, two Lake County Commissioners specifically you and Mr. Troy apparently accept the Mexican Matricular Consular Card as a legal form of identity for Mexicans. Is this factual?
Hamercheck: “”No, this is not factual. I can say with certainty, I do not accept this Matricular what the hell card. And Dan Troy has consistently said it was nothing but a feel good resolution that the Prosecutor stated then and now has no effect of law. If I may expand on this a little bit, this Matricular whatever resolution is an example of a resolution where symbolism is taking priority over substance. Several people use this resolution to call Lake County a sanctuary county. They point to homemade lists that I refute and point to the only authority that no one disputes, and that is President Trump. Neither Lake County or even Painesville City appear on any sanctuary list. I would also like to add I have tried early on as a Commissioner to get this repealed, but I could not get a second vote to do it. Literally this resolution has no authority; it is purely symbolic.””
Bob:Is it factual that you and Mr. Cirino proposed and drafted a resolution to support ICE and the rule of law? Then, did you and Mr. Troy vote to table the resolution indefinitely? If this is the case I find it most curious.
Hamercheck: “”The term you are looking for is to postpone indefinitely. I believe you will see from the above responses and much more that is beyond the scope of a simple e-mail that the timing was wrong and symbolism over substance was taking over. Focus had shifted to law enforcement and the justice system was being completely ignored and in fact compromised. By postponing indefinitely, the body of work is preserved and not rejected and can be re-engaged at a later time or included in a more comprehensive opportunity. This is the part that people just say, it’s just a simple resolution. Vote it up or down. Well, there is no such thing as a simple resolution, just like President Trump has avoided the calls to simply testify and tell the truth. I believe it was Rudy Giuliani who said it best, “whose truth?””
Bob: Finally to get to the basics, and please be specific, what is your position about illegal aliens, open borders and whether you do or don’t support cooperating with ICE.
Hamercheck: “”Regarding illegal aliens, I believe there are many steps and levels to this issue that should be addressed concurrently. Illegals should be stopped at the borders (I will explain more later). I believe enforcement efforts should focus on the hardcore criminal element, such as but not limited to, drug trafficking, human trafficking, sex crimes, gang activity, and violent crimes in general. That is not to say specifically that I would not question a window washer, but if that window washer were giving testimony against a murderer, rapist, and/or gang member, I would probably go after the really bad guy and not ask the window washer for their papers.Regarding open borders, oh hell no. Everyone should come through controlled areas and demonstrate that they are entering this country legally.Regarding support and cooperation with ICE, of course I support law enforcement and our justice system. The problem is this issue has been hijacked and turned into something it was never meant to be. The part that really galls me is where is the support for going after the people like the whackos from the previous administration that are calling for the abolishment of ICE that support misguided programs like Fast&Furious? Seriously, Fast&Furious involved at least 2,000 weapons and resulted in over 70 people being murdered, at least 2 of which were border patrol agents. Where is the outrage? Where are the calls for accountability? Who is being charged? Why is this truly substantial issue not being addressed? Probably because people would have to go to jail!””
