We recently received our property tax bill for last year. I started clutching my chest and I heard the muttering of some strange words that obviously came from my “Mr. Hyde”….I swear, I do not know him…
The first thing I noticed was we were instructed to make the (enormous) check payable to Lorraine Fende, Treasurer of Lake County. I wondered why the newly elected Treasurer, Mike Zuren, was not listed on the bill.
Thanks to our stellar Elections Board Executive Director, Ross McDonald, I found the answer.
Ohio Revised Code Section 321.01 County treasurer – election and term:
“A county treasurer shall be elected quadrennially in each county, who shall hold his office for four years from the first Monday of September next after his election”.
So there you have it, the Treasurer and the Auditor are treated differently than the other elected positions regarding the first day they report to work. It must have something to do with making sure that everything is in balance. Unfortunately, many accountants spend half their life out of balance….just ask my wife….
I decided that I better not depend on the U.S. Mail to deliver my tax payment on a timely basis. As an FYI, we just got a Christmas Card the other day that was mailed before December 25th.
Do you remember the old post office motto?
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”.… in our current state of affairs they have put that slogan on the back burner for now. It is more like “if it gets there, consider yourself lucky”…
I thought it best to hand deliver my property tax payment, so I ventured out fighting every Covid-19 virus I saw on on the way.
To my chagrin, I found the administration building to be closed to the public until February 4th. But I did find a mail box that accepts the property tax payment. It is in the parking lot behind the old administration building. Here is a picture of the mailbox. Darn, no excuses for late payment…they have thought of everything.
