Updated 5/9/21 12:15 pm with citizen’s comment.

We received a lead from a Lake County citizen that the local FOX I-team was investigating a claim that a Painesville police officer was found intoxicated in his car. We sent the following records to the Painesville Police Department:

To whom it may concern:

We have been made aware of the FOX I-team investigation about an off duty Painesville Police officer being found slumped over, or passed out in the driver’s seat of his car with a female in the passenger seat also passed out.

We are requesting any and all public records relating to this incident.

Thank you,

We have met and spoke to Chief Waterman on other issues. We find him to be a dedicated public servant. No doubt, he is concerned that this happened in his department, and will take the necessary steps to heal the community and ensure that the officer gets the needed guidance to get back on the right path.

For the community’s and the officer’s well-being, we hope that this is a unfortunate lapse in judgement that can be rectified.

The following comment was received from a Lake County resident:

Thank you for the follow-up article about the Painesville policeman. I believe everything was handled properly by both departments. It was all a matter of discretion which I hope and believe would be afforded to any citizen who makes the same mistake. But because it involved a law enforcement officer, who should be held to a higher slandered, it needs be handled with a slightly higher level of scrutiny.  It appears as though that expectation was met by the actions indicated on the Painesville Police Department report.

Thank you for concern regarding transparency and accountability within our local governments.
