Timberlake Mayor Tackles Rising Property Taxes

Timberlake Mayor John Marra

Mayor Marra has been very active in dealing with the out-of-control property taxes.

Here is a link to the article that he wrote for the News-Herald:

He received the following email from a Lake County resident:

Mayor Marra,

I just finished reading your editorial in the News Herald and wanted to thank you for grandly summarizing one of my major concerns as relates to property taxes. I find it heartening to see a local representative outlining a problem that other officials have not.

I moved to Concord Twp. six years ago and paid $285,000 for our home.

When we received the 2024 Property Value revaluation I was floored. The letter said our adjusted home value is now $497,380.  We have made no major changes to the house and by your explanation, it isn’t based on improvements anyway. But even if it were, I would have needed to add a duplicate house to the property to justify this number!

I really have to question the thinking of county and/or state officials that feel this revaluation process is reasonable or accurate. Unimaginable to me that someone can devise a computer program that uses whatever metrics that decide my home’s value and potential tax obligation is ~74% higher in six years. Who are these people? How did they convince our representatives to purchase their computer program?

Fay Road runs parallel to our street. I think it effects my property value much like the lake houses you have in Timberlake. Some of these riverfront properties sell for ~ $1Million.

I missed the first review deadline but will pursue this in January

I recently voted Yes to our local levy supporting our Fire Department. I want to be a contributing community member to the township. But between being retired and on a fixed income, I think my share of taxes are unfair. This revaluation letter puts a whole new meaning to UNFAIR!

Again, your explanation of the county revaluation process is much appreciated.

I plan on passing on a similar message to David Joyce and Jamie Callender. I will also message the Lake County Commissioners.

Mayor Marra took his mission to help all residents of Lake County to another level by reading his next letter to the Lake County Commissioners at the November 14, 2024 meeting. He is asking for the Commissioners’ help to address the citizens’ concerns with the State legislators.

President-Elect Donald Trump has indicated that his administration, with the help of Congress, will abolish the federal Department of Education. This will push the task of public education directly in the hands of the State legislators. Clearly, a new day is dawning in the public education arena. It is the perfect opportunity for Ohio State Legislators to rethink school funding, eliminate a very complex, immoral taxation system, lessen the burden for local homeowners, and make public school districts accountable for the education of Ohio’s schoolchildren.

Commissioners Regovich and Plecnik address concerns expressed by Mayor Marra and Brian Massie. Commissioner Plecnik’s statement about seniors being taxed out of their homes will resonate with all Lake County residents.

LFC’s editorial comments on property taxes by Brian Massie:

There is a growing movement in the State of Ohio to inform the State legislators that we are demanding that they solve the property tax issue in Ohio. Property ownership is the foundation of freedom and liberty, and we will NEVER allow the government to force us out of our homes that we have worked all our lives to achieve.

Here is the start out the movement. If you can join us, on November 20th at 11:00 am at the Statehouse in Columbus, we would love to see you participate in this rally with us. Ohio Political News will be live-streaming the event for those that cannot make it.
