Committee to Eliminate Ohio’s Property Taxes Files Petition
The Committee to Eliminate Ohio’s Property Taxes has completed the first step in a citizen led initiative petition to have a Constitutional amendment eliminating Ohio’s property taxes placed on the November 2025 ballot with its submission to the Ohio Attorney General, David Yost.
It is very clear to most Ohioans that the current property tax system is excessively burdensome on citizens who are least able to pay. It promotes government growth with limited transparency, is overly complex, unsustainable, and disregards your ability to pay. Property ownership in Ohio feels more like renting from the government, hindering true ownership. This limits our freedom, obstructs wealth transfer to future generations, and keeps families in poverty.
Ohio families are stretched thin, and the government just keeps taking more. For years, our State legislators have looked the other way, slapping on short-term fixes while the real problem – runaway spending – keeps getting worse. This isn’t about not having enough money. It’s about the public sector that has outgrown what everyday taxpayers can support.
“Ohio’s nearly 50-year-old property tax regime is completely broken, as evidenced by that Ohioans across our state have experienced UNVOTED property tax increases of up to 30% in recent years. Ohio needs a competitive edge to attract new job-creating capital & investment in the 21st century. I believe eliminating property taxes can help provide that edge, as it will draw a clear distinction between our state and others. Plus — no more poorly-crafted abatements that too often do not meet expectations. A level playing field and maximum immediate benefit for ALL who invest in our communities,” says Ross County Auditor Jeff Lehner.
“Thanks to inflation, property taxes are wildly out of control. Consequently, young families are fighting to survive, while seniors are being taxed out of their homes. If the state legislature fails to act on meaningful reforms, such as freezing property values at sales price and expanding the homestead exemption into a 100% property tax exemption for seniors, then we the people have no choice but to pursue a state constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes. It’s time to play good cop, bad cop with the politicians in Columbus. Either you reform property taxes in a big way now, or we vote to abolish property taxes and take all our money back,” said Lake County Commissioner John Plecnik.
Clearly, our State legislators will not fix the problem. We have had enough. It’s time to stand up, speak out, and take back control. Join our movement to eliminate Ohio’s property taxes. Go to AxOHTax.com for more details.
